x402 revives the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code as an open protocol for machine-native payments: a server answers 402 with payment requirements, the client pays and retries. Coinbase introduced it and contributed it to the Linux Foundation, and the specification and reference SDKs (TypeScript, Python, Go) now live at github.com/x402-foundation/x402. The exact scheme is specified for EVM, Solana and more than a dozen other networks. On 2026-09-23 the Foundation merged a spec for exact payments over Bitcoin Lightning (network namespace lnbtc, PR #2861), which Block says it contributed: the server issues a fresh BOLT11 invoice bound to the request, the client pays it and returns the preimage, and the facilitator checks that SHA-256(preimage) matches the payment hash. As of 2026-09-24 the Lightning scheme is a specification only; SDK support in the official packages is still open pull requests.
